Although we all have the same mouth structure, the variety of sounds and sound combinations we can make to convey human thoughts is simply amazing. Just take a look at the IPA alphabet on the web:http://www2.arts.gla.ac.uk/IPA/fullchart.html. Every time I learn a few phrases in an obscure language I revel at the sight of a new smiling face. Algebra helped me understand how computers work (Boolean algebra)and see relationships between time, space, and movement. Both are also practical. Basic linear algebra is a bag of tricks to do arithmetic easier. Mental arithmetic is algebra. Learning the grammatical structure of another language helps understand the structure of one's own language. The list of reasons can go on and on. --Original Message----- From: Kathleen Rathbun [mailto:kathyesl@comcast.net] Sent: Monday, May 03, 2004 3:13 PM To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: [NIFL-ESL:10261] Re: I NEED FEEDBACK A.S.A.P.!!! In answer to this question: It's important to realize that the world does not necessarily revolve around English speakers. One can have more friends from other countries and not perpetuate the ethnocentrism.---Kathleen ----- Original Message ----- From: "Shanpin Fanchiang" <sfanchiang@dhs.co.la.ca.us> To: "Multiple recipients of list" <nifl-esl@literacy.nifl.gov> Sent: Monday, May 03, 2004 10:08 AM Subject: [NIFL-ESL:10260] Re: I NEED FEEDBACK A.S.A.P.!!! > There are so many ways to respond to this question... > - to appreciate the similarity among different cultures > - to see the difference of other languages, compared to our own > - to have a "different pair of glasses" to see the world > - to challenge ourselves > - to learn to be flexible > -.... > It is fun to think about this question. > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Tracy Howell" <tracylhowell10@hotmail.com> > To: "Multiple recipients of list" <nifl-esl@literacy.nifl.gov> > Sent: Friday, April 30, 2004 11:41 PM > Subject: [NIFL-ESL:10253] I NEED FEEDBACK A.S.A.P.!!! > > > > a.. > > Students ask me, "Why is it neccessary or important to learn and > speak > > another language besides your own?"
