Hoyer Statement on House Override of President’s Farm Bill Veto

WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the House overrode President Bush’s veto of the bipartisan Farm Bill:

“Today the House overwhelmingly rejected the President’s misguided veto of the Farm Bill.  As the costs of food and gasoline have increased, this Farm Bill contains important provisions that address both issues.  Millions of families facing high food prices will be able to put healthy food on their tables as a result of record levels of investment in nutrition programs.  This legislation also continues to encourage energy independence by investing in new technologies and alternative sources, including cellulosic ethanol.

“The President’s decision to reject the bipartisan Farm Bill is disheartening, but not surprising.  This veto confirms that his only strategy is obstinance and obstruction.  Democrats and Republicans from both the House and Senate worked together to craft a bill that would garner wide support, yet the President chose to ignore these efforts and stand in the way of a Farm Bill that takes needed steps toward reform, offers help to Americans pinched by rising food costs, and takes us further down the path toward energy independence.”
