Hi Arina,

I have created a website of health literacy resources. You cannot link
to it but I can send you the htm file and you can view it in your
browser. I am trying to promote health literacy here at the hospital. I
bought the health Literacy toolkit from AMA. It has a DVD, CD and
manual. The DVD is a series of interviews with people of low literacy
skills. I have introduced it to our patient Ed committee and it will be
shown to all new medical hires. I will get the file to you later today.

I understand you are promoting to the community and I am promoting to
the hospital but you may find some of the resources useful.

Two useful reports are from NCSALL (released yesterday
http://www.ncsall.net/fileadmin/resources/fob/2008/fob_9b.pdf) and AHRQ
www.ahrq.gov/clinic/epcsums/litsum.htm.

I would also recommend the Institute of Medicine report on health
literacy (see the IOM web site). In addition the American Medical
Association publishes a book on health literacy (Eds Schwartzberg et al)
and recently published a report on the NAAL health literacy measures
(Sheida White). Another good book is "Advancing Health Literacy" by
Zarcadoolas, Pleasant and Greer (2005). The National Institute for
Literacy also just produced a webcast on Health literacy that might be
useful and is accessible on their web site.

Hi everyone,

I am new to my position and need to address health literacy in my
community. Can anyone make any suggestions as to where to start? I am
working on a fixed budget.

Many thanks,

Arina Boldt
