Thanks for the various suggestions of helpful educational materials for
families, about child mental health issues (received online and
offline).
Following up on what Chris mentioned about the notion of "mental health
literacy" ... Australia is generally way ahead in terms of innovative
mental health work e.g. Reach Out! does fantastic mental health
promotion work with youth (by the way, this organization is in the
process of starting up in the U.S. as well). The Australian work on
mental health literacy is interesting but it has been limited in that
their conceptualization of mental health literacy has mostly been
focused on increasing knowledge of mental health disorders and ability
to seek psychiatric treatment, and therefore been centered in the
patient/consumer. I'd love to hear from others interested in a broader
understanding of the issue, and from those who are currently involved in
applying health literacy ideas and practices to mental health even if
it's not being called mental health literacy. Chris, can you say a bit
more about the mental health literacy assessment tool you've developed?
