Great suggestions,Sarah and great job, Matt! Please be sure the font is not
too large. If it is, it will look like a young child's reader and degrade
the adults who already feel embarrassed because of their pre-developed skills.

Matt,

Congratulations on making a real effort to reach out to low literate
patients!

A quick look at the patient information brought two things to mind. One is
that the print font is san serif which is not as easy to read for a low
literate person than a serif font. Secondly, the readability level is that of a
seventh grade plus. I would rewrite this to make it on a fourth or fifth
grade readability at most. You might want to have an adult education class take
a look at the information to see if it is clear to them.

All the best!

Colleagues,

We just developed a health literacy portion on our website for the Jefferson
County Health Department. This is one of the first steps in the first
effort to improve health literacy in our county, and to serve as positive models
and resources for other counties to follow. I would greatly appreciate it if
you could take the time to view the health literacy portion that I just
developed and provide any and all positive or negative feedback concerning the
site. The link will take you to the health literacy homepage of our website,
with links on the left to our health literacy page for patients, providers, and
public health professionals, as well as a resource page. I hope this site
can serve as a resource to you and I look forward to hearing your comments
regarding the health literacy site. The website is:
