Incorporating health literacy related services into Child Protective
work remains a daunting challenging but thanks to all the contributors
to this server, much progress has been made in the last year.

The two biggest achievements were the design and implementation of a
health insurance status form completed by Child Protective Service
Caseworkers at every child abuse home investigation. (Last year there
were 50,000+ such visits within 24 hours of a suspected child abuse
report) For those parents /caregivers reporting no health insurance,
the completed form is then hand delivered to the Department of Health
and Mental Hygiene facilitated enrollment program, and a health educator
contacts the family. If they are unable to reach the family, they
contact the Child Protective Worker who then reaches out to the family
with the Health Educator. The information is given to the Child
Protective Service worker for followup.

Our second achievement has been the development of a pilot program in
the five hundred daycare/headstart centers that come under Children's
Services. Fifty centers have been matched with facilitated enrollers,
and over two hundred and fifty additional centers in the same district
were matched with a health insurance enroller based in their district.
The next goal is the successful collaboration with the health insurance
enroller, and the literacy assistance center to design and implement
health and family
literacy materials, (including child abuse prevention), how to get help
when your child is NOT on target meeting developmental milestones, that
will be distributed to all of the parents/caregivers!

Several other smaller projects are ongoing that derived directly from
ideas and resources from this list server. Thanks again to everyone!
