This image, taken by the Surface Stereo Imager on NASA's Phoenix Mars
Lander on the 14th Martian day of the mission (June 7, 2008), shows the
cable that held the Robotic Arm's biobarrier in place during flight has
snapped. The cable's springs retracted to release the biobarrier right
after landing.
To the lower right of the image a spring is visible. Extending from that
spring is a length of cable that snapped during the biobarrier's release.
A second spring separated from the cable when it snapped and has been
photographed on the ground under the lander near one of the legs.
The Phoenix Mission is led by the University of Arizona, Tucson, on behalf
of NASA. Project management of the mission is by NASA's Jet Propulsion
Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. Spacecraft development is by Lockheed Martin
Space Systems, Denver.
