Fires in Eastern Russia and Sakhalin Island

Fires burning in eastern Russia and on Sakhalin Island are blanketing the area with smoke in late May.

Continued fire activity in eastern Russia is creating heavy smoke, particularly in the Amur River valley, at image left. This image was acquired on May 20, 2002, by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite.
