I'm in total agreement, too. Carefully orchestrating
the formation of a learning community is one of our
jobs, as far as I'm concern. And that orchestration
happens on a daily basis. The result carries over to
how students relate and interact outside of the
classroom. Learning and life in the mainstream
culture become a (sometimes) fun, productive group
project. Needless to say a heck-of-lot more
self-directed learning takes place and is brought back
to class as those wonderful 'student centered'
teaching moments that we can then work with.
