Hi Sara:

We find that distance learning is enhanced with Internet-based content.
AwesomeStories.com, which is free to teachers, schools and libraries,
is web-based and uses the Internet the way it was originally intended.
The students love AwesomeStories for many reasons: It is interactive,
allows the user to see pictures and maps at the exact moment they are
needed (which reinforces learning and memory), provides a safe guided
tour of on-line primary sources (which the students would likely not
find on their own), and allows both teacher-guided and independent
learning. The text is written in understandable English but many of the
links lead to more sophisticated writing, thereby providing greater
challenge for more advanced students. "Teaching with Movies"
http://www.awesomestories.com/sample_topics/teaching_movies.shtml is
particularly engaging for ESL students, as are the site's history
http://www.awesomestories.com/history/ and disaster
http://www.awesomestories.com/disasters/ channels. Although the
site is subscription-based ($19.95 a year for hundreds of stories with
hundreds of thousands of primary-source links), it is free to teachers
and their classes, schools and libraries. You just have to sign-up for
academic membership at AwesomeStories' main URL:
http://www.awesomestories.com/

Hi there,
Is anyone using a distance learning product with their ESL students
that the
students really love to use? What is your review of the product(s) you
are
using?
-Sara
