Small Business Assistance and Outreach
Program Description
The mission of the NIOSH program for Small Business Assistance and Outreach is to minimize and ultimately eliminate occupational diseases, injuries, and fatalities among individuals working in small enterprises through a focused program of research, prevention efforts, and public health activities. The program strives to fulfill its mission through:
- High Quality Research: NIOSH will continually strive for high quality research and prevention activities that will lead to reductions in occupational injuries and illnesses among workers in small businesses.
- Practical Solutions: NIOSH is committed to developing and disseminating practical solutions to the complex problems that cause occupational diseases, injuries, and fatalities among workers in small businesses.
- Partnerships: NIOSH will foster partnerships with labor, industry, government, and other stakeholders to achieve successful outcomes. We recognize that these collaborative efforts are usually the best means of reducing occupational injuries and illnesses. Facilitating these partnerships is a cornerstone of the NIOSH program for Small Business Assistance and Outreach. Small business owners are encouraged to contact NIOSH for assistance and are welcomed as participants in ongoing and future research efforts.
- Research to Practice (r2p): Every project within the NIOSH Small Business Assistance and Outreach Cross-sector area will formulate a strategy to promote the transfer of research findings into prevention practices and products that will be adopted in the workplace. Through this program, NIOSH is giving special emphasis to outreach efforts meeting the occupational safety and health needs of small business owners, managers, and workers. We believe that our research only realizes its true value when put into practice.
