Military Academy Nominations

Nomination Sources
Members of the United States Senate and the House of Representatives may nominate eligible candidates for appointments to the United States Military Academies. Senators nominate applicants state-wide, while Representatives, such as Congressman Hinchey, may only nominate applicants from their congressional district. Applicants should apply to the service academy of their choice in the spring of their junior year in high school and request a nomination from the appropriate source shortly thereafter.

Eligibility Requirements
Each year Congressman Hinchey receives large numbers of requests for service academy nominations. In order to be considered for nomination, an applicant must meet ALL of the following conditions. He or she must 1) Be a United States Citizen; 2) Be at least 17 years of age and not past your 22nd birthday on July 1st of the year you want to be admitted and; 3) Must have never been married, nor have any legal dependents. If you do not meet all of the above conditions, please do not apply for a nomination.

Academy Pre-Candidate File and Medical Exam
Once aware of your interest in competing for a nomination, the academy will send a Pre-Candidate Questionnaire to complete and return. On the basis of this information, the academy will authorize a medical examination. The medical examination is required, and anyone who does not successfully pass it will not be accepted to the academy.

Academy Advisory Panel Interview
Late in the fall, each candidate who has submitted a completed nomination application will be scheduled for a personal interview with my Academy Advisory Panel. Efforts are made to include one panel member who is knowledgeable about the academies to help answer questions that you may have.

You should make every effort to familiarize yourself with the service academy of your choosing. Applicants should study the academy catalog to become more aware of the rules and codes of conduct at the academy. During the course of the interview, applicants should be prepared to answer questions determining their genuine interest in attending a service academy and pursuing a military career. It is strongly suggested that you find out as much about the academy before the interview. Applicants should also make every effort to visit the academy of their choosing.
