Board of Health Recommendations for Hiring Qualified Environmental Health Practitioners
NALBOH’s newest environmental health publication is a must read for boards with environmental health roles and responsibilities. The publication does not aim to solve the shortage of environmental health professionals, but it will support the development of the workforce by showing the many benefits of employing competent, academically prepared environmental health practitioners by local, state, and tribal health departments.
A Guide for Local Boards of Health Considering the Feasibility of a Consolidation of Independent Local Public Health Jurisdictions
This publication was developed to assist local boards of health that may be considering the feasibility and potential of a combination, consolidation, or regionalization of health departments or jurisdictions. It offers a compendium of experiences and involvement through the years of both small and metropolitan health district consolidations.

Swine Flu Update
The swine flu (H1N1) is highly contagious and continues to spread from human to human. The symptoms of swine flu virus in people are similar to the symptoms of seasonal flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. A significant number of people who have been infected with this virus also have reported diarrhea and vomiting. Also, like seasonal flu, severe illnesses and death has occurred as a result of illness associated with this virus.
The CDC is still learning about the severity of novel H1N1 flu virus. At this time, there is not enough information to predict how severe the H1N1 flu outbreak will be in terms of illness and death or how it will compare with seasonal influenza. Boards of health must be preparing for the possibility of mass vaccinations should the time occur. Pandemic flu plans should be fully functional and health agency staff should have a very clear understanding of their potential roles and responsibilities.
