Some list members have asked for the MALP paper I referenced in a
previous post (it was not attached)
Here is link to the article - A Mutually Adaptive Learning Paradigm for
Hmong Students (Marshall, 1998) - as a pdf:

I think everyone on the list might enjoy sharing short lists of
professional-type readings that pertain to English language learners
with limited formal schooling.
I'd like to recommend these (I'm not repeating things that Elaine Tarone
and others have already mentioned):
1. What is the What by Dave Eggers
2. Weinstein, G. (1986). From mountaintops to city streets: An
ethnographic investigation of literacy and social process among the
Hmong of Philadelphia. Unpublished Dissertation, University of
Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.
3. Arthur, J. (2003). 'Baro Afkaaga Hooyo!' A case study of Somali
literacy teaching in Liverpool. International Journal of Bilingual
Education and Bilingualism, 6(3&4), 253-266.
4. Biber, D., & Hared, M. (1991). Literacy in Somali: Linguistic
consequences. Annual Review of Applied Linguistics, 12, 260-282.
5. McMichael, C. (2002). 'Everywhere is Allah's place': Islam and
the everyday life of Somali women in Melbourne, Australia. Journal of
Refugee Studies, 15(2), 171-188.
6. Double the Work: Challenges and Solutions to Acquiring Language
and Academic Literacy for Adolescent English Language Learners by Short
and Fitzsimmons
http://www.all4ed.org/publication_material/reports/double_work

7. Warriner, D. S. (2007). "It's just the nature of the beast":
Re-imagining the literacies of schooling in adult ESL education.
Linguistics and Education, 18, 305-324.
8. Menard-Warwick, J. (2005). Intergenerational trajectories and
sociopolitical context: Latina immigrants in adult ESL. TESOL Quarterly,
39(2), 165-185.
9. Wolf, M. (2007). Proust and the squid: The story and science of
the reading brain. New York: HarperCollins Publishers.
