Experts Work to
Identify TELL
Sites for Research Experts in transitioning adult English language
learners to adult basic education and high school completion programs
met in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 6-7. Their task was to assist OVAE in
identifying 10 local program sites for its two-year Transitioning
English Language Learners (TELL) project that is gathering instructional
and programmatic techniques used for this transition in a number of
states. Announcement of programs selected for TELL participation is
slated for this spring. Experts participating included: Phil Anderson,
Florida Department of Education; Sandra Belitza-Vazquez, New York State
Education Department; Debra Jones, California Department of Education;
Brigitte Marshall, Oakland, Calif., Unified School District; Paul Kei
Matsuda, Arizona State University; Joanie Rethlake, Texas Learns; and
Leslee Oppenheim, City University of New York.

North Dakota's
David Massey
Retires Jan. 30 North Dakota's state director, David Massey, will retire
Jan. 30 after 33 years of service with the North Dakota Department of
Public Instruction. Massey served as the architect of North Dakota's
adult education system in its development over many decades, and his
organizational skills benefited a system in which he occupied the only
state professional position in adult education. As assistant
superintendent for educational support and community learning for the
state, Massey was responsible for a range of issues yet consistently
served as an advocate for adult education. He built the state's program
into a useful model for other rural states.

Tauvela Fale Is New
State Director in
American Samoa American Samoa Community College recently announced that
Tauvela Fale has replaced Taitaifono Otineru as American Samoa's state
director of adult education. Fale previously served as special assistant
to the director in the adult education, literacy and extended learning
division of the college. He came to the college from Pacific Resources
for Education and Learning (PREL) in Hawaii. Otineru will continue to
serve the college in another role.

Stay tuned tomorrow for info about next week's targeted discussion on
working with literacy level learners, with guest facilitator Martha
Bigelow.

Thanks.
Miriam
