WASHINGTON – Congressman Dennis Cardoza (D-Merced) has introduced a bill (H.R. 5542), that would increase the penalty for public officials convicted of breaching the public trust.  Specifically, this bill adds 2 years to the sentence of any local, state or federal official convicted under federal felony statues for abusing their office for personal gain.

“Politicians love to increase sentences for crack addicts, but they have failed to pass laws that punish their own for exploiting cracks in the system,’ said Cardoza. “As elected officials, I believe we must set a higher standard for ethical conduct.  Today, the word ‘corruption’ has become synonymous with Congress in the minds of too many Americans.  I believe we have an obligation to demand harsh punishment for those who fail to meet the highest standards of official conduct.”

Given the unique role public officials play as guardians of the public trust, Mr. Cardoza strongly believes all public officials must strive to exceed the high expectation of their constituents and the Constitution.  This bill makes it clear that Congress must take responsibility for its own affairs, and hold responsible those who abuse the public trust for personal gain.

The American people expect and deserve a Congress that is ethical, effective and worthy of the public trust.  Through enactment of H.R. 5542, Congress would enhance the level of trust that the American people have in their elected representatives.
