WASHINGTON – Congressman Dennis Cardoza, D-Merced, has been named a Senior Whip by House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Maryland. The position gives Cardoza more responsibility in persuading other House members how to vote on key legislation. He had previously served as a Regional Whip. “I am excited to take on this new role and pleased that my party’s leadership decided it was important to have a moderate in the position,” Cardoza said. “With so many critical issues on the agenda for this Congress, I look forward to having a greater impact.” The appointment is the latest in a string of leadership positions that Cardoza has assumed as he begins his second term in Congress. In December, Cardoza was elected co-chair of the Blue Dog Coalition, a prominent group of 35 moderate to conservative House Democrats. He was also appointed to the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee. |
