WASHINGTON – Congressman Dennis Cardoza, D-Merced, has been appointed to the House Committee on International Relations, where he will play an active role in developing the nation’s foreign policy agenda and oversee efforts to advance U.S. national interests abroad.

“Now, more than at any other time in our nation’s history, our foreign policy affects the lives of everyday Americans,” Cardoza said.  “I want to bring common sense to our decision making and help guide our foreign policy in a direction that promotes national security and increases economic prosperity, especially in the Central Valley.

Cardoza’s appointment will give many Valley residents a new voice in determining U.S. policy toward their countries of origin.  “The Valley is home to many ethnic groups that have a strong interest in key areas throughout the world, and I look forward to giving a voice to their concerns through my work on the committee,” Cardoza added.

The House International Relations Committee deals with oversight and legislation relating the deployment and use of United States Armed Forces; enforcement of United Nations or other international sanctions; the Agency for International Development; State and Defense Department activities involving arms transfers and sales, and arms export licenses; international law; promotion of democracy; international law enforcement issues, including terrorism and narcotics control programs and activities; and other matters relating to international economic policy and trade.

Cardoza, co-chair of the Blue Dog Coalition, will retain his seats on the Agriculture Committee and Resources Committee.  Typically, members of Congress can only serve on two committees.  Cardoza’s three committee assignments in the 109th Congress demonstrate the continuing faith of the House Democratic leadership in his ability to shape policy.

Subcommittee assignments have yet to be announced for all three committees.

During the 108th Congress, Cardoza served on the House Agriculture, Resources, and Science committees.
