WASHINGTON – Rep. Dennis Cardoza (D-Atwater) today requested state assistance for Merced County in combating the severe flooding that has impacted the region this week.  Cardoza’s request follows declarations of disaster by the city of Merced and Merced County.

In his letter to Governor Schwarzenegger, Cardoza expressed his concern that flooding is overwhelming local response capabilities. With more rain expected this weekend and early next week, further flooding could place additional strain on local resources.

“As the Merced County Board of Supervisors noted in their April 4, 2006 Resolution of Disaster Declaration, this natural disaster has overwhelmed the ability of local resources to combat the effects of the flooding and severe weather.  While local personnel are working hard to address the damages, state assistance is needed and warranted.”

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger
State Capitol Building
Sacramento, CA 95814

Dear Governor Schwarzenegger:

I am writing to request that you issue a Declaration of Disaster for the County of Merced.  This declaration is needed to assist local officials in dealing with the heavy rainfall experienced in Merced County beginning in March 2006 and continuing through April 5th.  The resulting floods are endangering lives, homes, businesses, bridges, power supplies and other critical infrastructure, creating tremendous hardships for the citizens of Merced County.

As the Merced County Board of Supervisors noted in their April 4, 2006 Resolution of Disaster Declaration, this natural disaster has overwhelmed the ability of local resources to combat the effects of the flooding and severe weather.  While local personnel are working hard to address the damages, state assistance is needed and warranted.

It is for these reasons that I ask your immediate assistance in obtaining a State Declaration of Disaster for Merced County.  I respectfully urge you to ensure the Merced County Board of Supervisor’s request is reviewed expeditiously and that state assistance be granted.

                                                Sincerely,

                              C

Dennis A. Cardoza

                                                            Member of Congress
