WASHINGTON – Congressman Dennis Cardoza (D-Merced) was today named Chairman of the House Agriculture Subcommittee on Horticulture and Organic Agriculture for the 110th Congress. The committee has jurisdiction over legislation pertaining to fruits and vegetables, which constitute the lion’s share of Central Valley agricultural production. Cardoza will also serve on the Subcommittee on Livestock, Dairy and Poultry and the Subcommittee on Conservation, Credit, Energy and Research.

In this new capacity, the Congressman will play a leading role in the formation of the 2007 Farm Bill, which will have a major impact on Central Valley agriculture and the local economy.

“As Chairman, I will work hard to ensure that Central Valley farmers get a fair shake in the 2007 Farm Bill,” said Cardoza. “In today’s increasingly competitive global marketplace, it is critical that we support valuable competitiveness, nutrition, research, and conservation programs. To maintain California’s leadership position in the agriculture industry, our growers need and deserve full participation in the Farm Bill.”

The House Agriculture subcommittee on Horticulture and Organic Agriculture has jurisdiction over fruits and vegetables, honey and bees, marketing and promotion orders, plant pesticides, quarantine, adulteration of seeds, insect pests, and organic agriculture.

Cardoza, who has served on the House Agriculture Committee since 2003, was also named last week to the prestigious House Rules Committee. The Rules Committee serves as the gateway for all major legislation considered by the House of Representatives.
