WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressmen Jerry McNerney (CA-11) and Dennis Cardoza (CA-18), in honor of the Port of Stockton’s 75th anniversary, announced that the Port of Stockton will receive $3.4 million in federal funding, based on requests made by the two members of Congress.

The funds will be used for maintenance of the Stockton Ship Channel – the vital link that allows deep-draft vessels to reach the Port of Stockton – as well as studying the impact and viability of expanding and deepening navigation channels from San Francisco Bay to the Port.

“The importance of the Port of Stockton to the vitality of our region cannot be understated. I am happy that Dennis and I can announce this crucial funding – in honor of the Port’s 75th anniversary,” Rep. McNerney said. “The Port of Stockton is a major job creator in San Joaquin County and these funds will ensure that job creation continues, and even accelerates. In particular, I am excited about the vast potential for renewable energy job growth from firms in locating in and around the Port of Stockton.”

“As the second largest inland port in the country, the Port of Stockton is a crucial economic driver both regionally and nationally,” said Rep. Cardoza. “With our economy facing uncertain times, I am happy to join with my colleague Jerry McNerney to ensure the future growth and development of the port for another 75 years.  Furthermore, I am pleased that the Appropriations Committee has recognized the national importance of the port again this year.”

“I deeply appreciate the Congressman McNerney and Congressman Cardoza’s efforts to maintain the Stockton Ship Channel,” said Richard Aschieris, Port Director of the Port of Stockton.  It is the Port’s link to the world and vital to our job creation mission.  The ship channel helps bring family wage jobs to Stockton.”

Descriptions of the two projects appear below:

  1. $2.909 million for San Joaquin River-Port of Stockton Dredging
Funding will be used to conduct maintenance dredging and riverbank protection along the 35-foot deep Stockton Ship Channel on the San Joaquin River, which extends from Suisun Bay to the turning basin at the Port of Stockton. Annual maintenance dredging of the Stockton Ship Channel is necessary for the safe passage of deep-draft commercial vessels to the inland-Port of Stockton, the second largest inland port in the United States.

  1. $410,000 for San Francisco Bay to Stockton Project
The Port of Stockton and local governments have expressed interest in widening and deepening the navigation channels extending from the San Francisco Bay to the Port of Stockton. This funding will be used to consider the environmental impact of expanding and dredging this important transportation artery for waterborne traffic. In particular, the funding will be used to initiate sediment testing along with disposal site investigation, hydraulic modeling, channel alignment, and the continuation of environmental studies on the navigation channels.
