WASHINGTON – Congressman Dennis Cardoza (D-Merced) early this morning voted against a House Budget bill that would increase the national debt by $20 billion and gut programs for the most vulnerable Americans, including foster children.

“In order to pay for tax cuts for individuals who make over $400,000, Republicans in Congress have singled out poor and disabled children for budget cuts.” Cardoza said. “As a parent of two foster children, I find this budget to be morally reprehensible.”

“Foster children rely on federal funding to have a chance at a successful life. It is indefensible that Republicans have turned either backs on the least fortunate children in our society.”

Cardoza asked last night on the floor – “In a two trillion dollar budget, must we cut funds from orphans and abused children to pay for tax cuts for the richest Americans?”

The Budget Reconciliation package that passed Congress late last night includes $600 million in cuts in foster care.
