Merced, CA – Today Congressman Dennis Cardoza and Mayor Ellie Wooten announced that the GSA (General Services Administration) – the agency of the federal government which oversees all federal buildings – has formally transferred ownership of Bell Station to the City of Merced. The City has renewed the lease with the Postal Service and plans to negotiate a long-term contract to keep the post office in its convenient, downtown location.

“Today’s announcement that the City now owns Bell Station and that the Postal Service will remain in the building, is a success story of how federal and local government can work together effectively,” said Cardoza. “Not only is this a big win for the City of Merced, it’s a big win for the hard working taxpayers in the 18th Congressional District. Millions of dollars will be saved by not having to relocate postal operations.”

Thanks to a well-organized community effort led by Mayor Wooten, City of Merced officials, and Congressman Cardoza, the City has been awarded the deed to Bell Station – at no cost – after years of uncertainty as to the building’s future. In addition to urging the GSA to keep Bell Station in local hands, Congressman Cardoza worked vigorously to cut through the red-tape at the GSA and ensure a quick transfer of the deed once the City’s proposal was approved in early August of 2007.

Merced businesses, residents, and community leaders all agree that Bell Station is a centerpiece of the community. Bell Station has served the city of Merced since 1933, one of only five non-residential buildings in Merced on the National Register of Historic Places. Now that the City owns Bell Station, it will be able to restore and maintain the historic character of the building, while at the same time making it available to vital public services.
