WASHINGTON – After attending a detailed briefing by 9/11 Commission Chair Thomas Keane and Vice Chair Lee Hamilton, Rep. Dennis Cardoza, D-Merced, today urged Congress to adopt all of the Commission’s recommendations and called for the House of Representatives to reconvene immediately.

“The chair and vice chair of this bipartisan commission were both emphatic and persuasive in their advocacy for the full implementation of their report, and I wholeheartedly concur,” said Cardoza, who returned to Washington this week in the middle of the August recess to discuss the 9/11 panel’s findings with House Democratic leaders.

“Congress must act quickly on these recommendations and address them in a bipartisan fashion.  These issues are too serious to just put off until is it convenient for Congress to address them.  We know that we were not as safe as we should have been on 9/11.  We need to make sure we are as safe as we can be now.”

In July, the 9/11 Commission recommended sweeping changes in how U.S. intelligence agencies and the Department of Homeland Security operate.

Specifically, the Commission called for:  the reorganization of domestic-intelligence programs within the FBI; the creation of a single position at the White House to coordinate the work of the 15 intelligence agencies and their budgets; the establishment of an interagency counterterrorism center to absorb the smaller antiterrorism center operated by the CIA; and changes in the way Congress oversees the intelligence community.
