The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) intends to issue a funding opportunity (i.e., a Request for Applications, or RFA), Mechanisms of Drug Abuse Interactions with HIV Neuropathogenesis, in the summer of 2006.  The goal of this RFA is to solicit applications aimed at understanding how acute and chronic administration of addictive drugs affects HIV neuroinvasion, neuropathogenesis, glial activation and inflammation, and subsequent neuronal dysfunction or damage, as well as elucidate the functional, structural, and neurochemical consequences of these perturbations.   The RFA will encourage a broad range of interdisciplinary research, using in vitro, animal and human approaches to address these interactions.  It is expected that applicants will clearly define collaborative relationships that will allow interdisciplinary studies with multiple perspectives, including drug abuse, virology, neurology, neurobiology, pharmacology, toxicology, glial activation and inflammation, immunology, molecular genetics/genomics, and behavior relevant to the consequences of HIV infection.  The RFA will also encourage the use of existing resources (such as genomic/proteomic databases, animal repositories, brain banks, or pre-established clinical/basic research networks) in novel ways to address interactions between drug abuse and HIV infection as appropriate.
