Michael,

I am reluctant to get involved in a two way discussion that may not be of
wider interest. I do not believe that the Japanse "work ethic' and
preference for collective decision making, consensus building and team work
can be attributed to the American occupation. The American occupation had
some impact on the strength of trade unions, the constitution etc.. but did
not, in my view, alter the culture.

There are many definitions of language and culture. I think that when I say
I want to learn the Russian language,or someone wants to improve their
ability to function in the English language, there is no need for a
definition. Some, like me, may do so for cultural reasons, others may have
more practical goals and objectives. Goals may vary but it is not a question
of definition. We know what we are talking about.

I have already stated my preference for teaching language based on whatever
way of thinking, and whatever subject matter, the adult learner finds
agreeable and comfortable. I do not believe it is the role of the language
teacher to challenge the ways of thinking of their students.
