Guide To Media Types

CD-ROM or DVD -- Larger data files can be ordered on standard CD-ROMs or DVDs or as a custom CD/DVD product. Many files come with software to facilitate use. CD-ROMs generally cost $50 apiece; DVDs, $60.

Printed Reports -- Some reports are still sold by the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO). When GPO no longer stocks them, the Census Bureau's Customer Services Center (CSC) may be able to produce the order as a print-on-demand printed product. The Customer Services Center can also create print-on-demand reports for documents available in PDF on the Census Bureau website.

Printed Maps -- Maps come in print or as PDF files on the Internet. Some maps may also be ordered on CD-ROM or DVD.

PDF -- Many reports that once were issued in print are now released in PDF format requiring Adobe Acrobat Reader. Users still needing PDFs in print can acquire these reports as print-on-demand products from the Customer Services Center (CSC) at 301-763-INFO(4636).

HTML -- Most Census Bureau data are published on the Internet. Some of the paper html files can be ordered in print or, in some cases, on diskette, for a cost from Customer Services or some other Census Bureau office (eg. Foreign Trade Division, Manufacturing and Construction Division, Population Division, etc.).

Press Releases -- Census Bureau press releases are often a gold mine for users; many have useful tables, sometimes in multiple formats (e.g., Excel).

Census Briefs -- The Census Bureau has increasingly published analysis in short reports written in a popular, friendly style. Briefs are being extensively used to publish Census 2000 data.
