Fact of the Day

Back to School

As millions of people begin to think about school this fall, here are some back-to-school facts to consider:

  • 76 million children and adults enrolled in school throughout the country in October 2007 – from nursery school to college. They comprised 27 percent of the entire population 3 and older.
  • 55 percent of 3- and 4-year olds enrolled in school in October 2007.
  • Sales at bookstores in August 2008 totaled 2.4 billion.

Three Ways To Search the Census Web Site

First, in the upper right-hand corner of the Census web page, click "FAQs," for the Question and Answer Center. Here you can search our dynamic set of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) or submit your question online for a quick emailed response.

Second, in the upper right hand corner of the Census home page you can type your search terms into the white text box and click "Go." This produces a search of the entire Census Bureau web site, along with the first several FAQs related to your search terms.

Third, click "Subjects A-Z" for hyperlinks to hundreds of Census subject areas and concepts on our website.

With these methods of locating data on the web site, you will be on your way toward locating Census data!

Recently Released


Small Area Health Insurance Estimates. These 2006 estimates show the demographic characteristics of people with and without health insurance coverage for every state and county in the nation. They are based on models combining data from a variety of sources, including the Current Population Survey, Census 2000, the Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program, County Business Patterns and administrative records. They are the only source for county-level estimates of health insurance coverage status until this fall, when single-year estimates from the 2008 American Community Survey for all geographic areas with total populations of 65,000 or more are released.

State and County Housing Unit Estimates: July 1, 2008. Updated estimates of the nation's housing stock at the national, state, and county levels for 2008.

Economic Census and Surveys

2007 Economic Census. This is a series of national-level data files on the various sectors in 2007. The files provide data on the number of establishments, sales, payroll, number of
employees, value of product line sales and other data items by industry. Data will be released through October. Recently released:

2007 Business Expenses for Wholesale and Retail Trades. This supplement to the annual surveys of wholesale and retail trades provides detailed data on business operating expenses. Expense data, along with cost of goods sold and sales, is one of the key ingredients used by market researchers to develop a profit/loss analysis. This expense data covers such items as labor costs, expensed materials and supplies, purchased advertising, rent, utilities, and depreciation.

County Business Patterns: 2007. Annual report containing data covering establishments with paid employees at the national and state levels, and in more than 3,100 counties. An
establishment is a single physical location at which business is conducted or services or industrial operations are performed. The report provides data on the number of establishments, employees, and quarterly and annual payroll for most of the 1,100 industries identified by the North American Industry Classification System.

2009 Capital Spending Report: U.S. Capital Spending Patterns: 1999-2007. A look at capital expenditure patterns reveals data about firms with and without employees, expenditures for structures and equipment, and expenditures for major industry sectors. The data comes from the Annual Capital Expenditures Survey.


Public Education Finances: 2007. This report from a census of public school districts offers a comprehensive look at revenues, expenditures, debt and assets. Highlights include spending on salaries, construction, support services, administration and transportation. These figures allow users to examine per-pupil expenditures and compare federal, state and local funding sources for public education systems by state.

Upcoming Releases


America's Families and Living Arrangements: 2007. Who are America's stay-at-home moms? Do they tend to have more or less education than mothers in the workforce? Are they younger or older? This report from the Current Population Survey provides a look at the basic trends in household and family composition. It also shows state-level variation in the kinds of households children live in, such as married-couple families, unmarried-partner households and single-parent families.

Income, Poverty and Health Insurance Coverage: 2008. On September 10, the Census Bureau will release the consolidated report on income, poverty and health insurance coverage for the nation, based on the Annual Social and Economic Supplement to the 2009 Current Population Survey.

Advance Report on Durable Goods Manufacturers' Shipments, Inventories and Orders: July 2009. Press release showing advance information on key business indicators. Scheduled for release August 26, 2009.

New Residential Sales: July 2009. Press release reporting new one-family houses sold and for sale. Includes sales prices, months on the market, and stage of construction. Scheduled for release August 26, 2009

Construction Spending (Put-in-Place): July 2009. Press release showing estimates of the value of total new construction put-in-place by type of construction (residential and non-residential), annual value, and by type of owner (private and public). Scheduled for release September 1, 2009.

Manufacturers' Shipments, Inventories and Orders: July 2009. Press release showing information on key business indicators. Shows revised durable goods totals, in addition to nondurable goods manufacturers' shipments, inventories, and orders. Scheduled for release September 2, 2009.

Economic Census and Surveys

2007 Economic Census: Mining Industry Series. This is a series of national-level data files on the mining sector (NAICS 21). These include data for industries such as crude petroleum, natural gas, gold, silver, iron, copper, lead, sand, gravel and others. The files provide data on the number of establishments, shipments, payroll, number of employees, value of product shipments and other data items by industry.

2007 Economic Census of Island Areas, Geographic Area Series: American Samoa. The data include the number of establishments, sales, payroll, number of employees and other data items for American Samoa - a U.S. territory in the South Pacific.
