Notice Number: NOT-DK-08-002
Key Dates
Release Date: October 5, 2007

National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), http://www.niddk.nih.gov
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) announces modifications and clarifications to PAR-07-188, “Collaborative Interdisciplinary Research Program in Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases (R24)”, http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-07-188.html, that will take place for the February 22, 2008 receipt date.
In the original PAR, direct costs could not exceed $750,000 for each award. This Notice serves to eliminate the $750,000 budget cap. In addition, R24 applications are only appropriate for projects with annual budgets exceeding $500,000 in annual direct costs. In consequence, the following steps need to be followed prior to the submission of a full-length application (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-02-004.html ): 1) Contact NIDDK program staff at least 6 weeks prior to submitting the application, i.e., as you are developing plans for the study, in order to discuss the content of the proposal and to obtain information on the requirements for submitting a pre-approval package; 2) Obtain written agreement from NIDDK staff that the NIDDK will accept your application; and, 3) Include a cover letter with the application that identifies the staff member who agreed to accept assignment of the application.
Applications to PAR-07-188 can now be submitted by multiple principal investigators (PI). Additional information on the implementation plans and policies and procedures to formally allow more than one PI on individual research awards can be found at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-07-017.html and http://grants.nih.gov/grants/multi_pi.
The R24 mechanism differs significantly from the P01 mechanism, as it calls for a multidisciplinary, team approach to solving a complex biological problem through a single research project. In contrast, a P01 application may support the integration of 3 or 4 independent research projects, each project contributing to the common theme of the total research effort (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/funding_program.htm#PSeries ). The R24 mechanism also differs significantly from the R01 mechanism in ways that have to do both with the budget size and the scope of the proposed research. Applications to pursue interdisciplinary projects requesting less than $500,000 in annual direct costs should be submitted as multiple principal investigator R01 proposals (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-07-017.html ). Thematically, the R24 mechanism encourages projects that are unlikely to be successful as an R01 application, such as: high-risk, discovery-oriented efforts; hypothesis-generating rather than hypothesis-driven science; resource-generating programs with the potential to transform an area of science.
Successful applicants to an R24 application will be allowed to submit a single (one-time) renewal application.
