Hi Everyone,

What a great discussion with such varied and interesting posts.

I would just like to mention a wonderful resource for helping teachers
learn how to teach reading. Originally created as a 15-hour workshop for
Fairfax County,Virginia,"Teaching Reading to Adult English Language
Learners" is available now in a shorter version in the CAELA Guide for
Adult ESL Trainers. After a review of the research, practical
implications are considered.

The workshop can be found at:
http://www.cal.org/caela/scb/III_D_TeachingReading.pdf

And the complete guide can be found at:
http://www.cal.org/caela/scb/guide.html

This workshop has been held over a dozen times all across Virginia and has
been extremely popular. In fact, we have begun face-fo-face and online
study circles to explore more in-depth the practice of teaching reading.

Hope that this is helpful.

Nancy

Heide,
I just used the first page with a low intermediate ESL class, drawing out
their understanding of the behavior and connecting it to what they already
know about their reading skills. As well, as we started reading some text,
I related back to the habits that were relevent.
This worked quite well, and it will be something students can use to
assess their reading effectiveness. It also gives them some metalanguage.

Thanks! emma
