Healthy Eating of the Fish you Catch

"Fish For Your Health" magnets now available! This magnet provides the EPA Fish Advisories website address and a message on the risks and benefits of fish consumption.

Since 1993, EPA has made the National Listing of Fish Advisories (NLFA) available to let people know about locally-issued fish advisories and safe eating guidelines. States, territories, and tribes (called "states") provide this information to EPA every year. The most recent update contains 2005 and 2006 data.

We have links to local fish advisory programs, so you can learn about the fish where you live. (Federal, state and tribal contacts can be found here.) Each month, as well, we compile news about the science, communication and health issues related to fish advisories. Federal consumption advice on the amount of fish to eat is also given.

Should I Eat the Fish I Catch?—This brochure is intended as a guide to help you select and prepare fish that are low in chemical pollutants.

Outreach Efforts

Outreach Materials for Communicating Fish Advisory Information—The Minnesota Department of Health collected state, tribal and federal fish advisory program outreach materials, including pamphlets, brochures, flyers, magnets, and other products.

Outreach Effort to the U.S. Medical Community

The EPA and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry worked together to inform health professionals and their patients about the dangers of eating fish harvested from contaminated waters.
