The power point is super--you can tell that a lot of work and time went into this presentation. I am fascinated because in my master's work I did research on the history of the American education system. It showed a big push for immigrants to assimilate and learn English only. This was very interesting from the point of view of the adult learner.
Thank you for sharing you hard work.
Joyce

----- Original Message ----
From: Sarah Young <syoung@cal.org>
To: The Adult English Language Learners Discussion List <englishlanguage@nifl.gov>;

I'd like to share with you all a presentation that I developed based on a personal research interest of mine -- the history of adult immigrant education. This began with wanting to know more about a hometown celebrity -- Jane Addams and her Hull House settlement -- and gradually grew into more research on how immigrants have learned and been taught English since the late 1800s. I presented this at two conferences this past spring, and now the PowerPoint and bibliography are available at http://www.cal.org/caela/esl_resources/ under "A Brief History of Adult ESL Instruction." There is not a paper to accompany this yet, but there's some good information, historical perspective, and interesting photos/images included in the PowerPoint. Please let me know off-list if you
have any questions or comments, as this is a topic I would like to continue pursuing in the future.
