2010 Census Questionnaire Drop-Off in Rural Areas (Update/Leave)

In Spring 2010 the Census Bureau will use a special enumeration process called "update/leave" in rural areas where most of the housing units do not have a city-style address such as "4505 Main Street." Addresses in U/L areas do not show the location of the housing unit and as a result census takers visit these units to drop off a questionnaire, which the respondent completes and mails back.

When visiting the units, enumerators also will verify and update address information in their address registers and on their maps. The update/leave operation will take place between March 1, 2010, and April 2, 2010.

In the photos below, the enumerator is shown checking her map, updating her address register, putting the questionnaire in a bag before dropping it off.
