Evidence-based Practice Center
Profile
The Oregon Evidence-based Practice Center in
Portland, Oregon, serves as a resource center for the production of systematic
reviews and related projects in evidence-based medicine. The focus of the Center
is in
the areas of adult health, prevention, mental health and substance abuse, and
dental health.
Capabilities
EPC Director Mark Helfand, M.D., M.S., M.P.H., also oversees the Oregon EPC Outcomes Research Unit, which provides research and consulting services in database design, data
management, clinical guidelines, performance measurement, cost effectiveness
analysis, and design and management of research and clinical quality improvement
projects. Associate Director Merwyn Greenlick, Ph.D., is professor and chair of
the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine and was the former
director of the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research. EPC Associate
Director William Hersh, M.D., chair of the Division of Medical Informatics and
Outcomes Research, is one of several Oregon EPC faculty involved with the Cochrane
Collaboration. Heading the work at the Center for Health Research is Jack F.
Hollis, Ph.D., a senior investigator who directs CHR's program in epidemiology and
disease prevention, including studies in health behavior and health promotion.
Investigators with the Evidence-based Practice Center have a particular interest
in diagnostic technology assessment, prevention effectiveness, evidence-based
informatics, research in managed care, and critical appraisal of
cost-effectiveness analysis and decision analysis. In the past, faculty
affiliated with the Center have investigated areas such as acute head injury,
thyroid function tests, smoking cessation programs, cancer screening, diagnostic
use of upper GI endoscopy, asthma diagnosis and management, anterior cruciate
ligament surgery, and statewide trauma systems.
Collaboration
The Center is a collaboration between Oregon Health & Science University and the
Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research, which has strong expertise in the
areas of prevention effectiveness, health economics, and managed care. Since
1964, the CHR has conducted public domain research on a broad range of health
and medical care issues, using Kaiser Permanente's large operating medical and
dental care system as a research setting and laboratory. Other scientific
partners include the Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the Center for
Outcomes Research and Education, part of the Providence Health System in
Portland. This collaboration enjoys support from, and seeks to serve, private
organizations and governmental agencies engaged in the delivery of care services
throughout the Northwest.
