The Rodeo-Chediski Fire in east-central Arizona had grown to over 463,000 acres as of Monday, July 1, 2002. The fire is about 45 percent contained, and many evacuees have been allowed to return to their homes; however, the danger is still high. Most of the containment lines constructed so far are holding. True- and false-color images from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) were captured on June 30. The true-color image shows the thick smoke that billows from the fire, while the false-color image shows the burned area. Vegetation is bright green, fire detection pixels are bright red, and the burned areas are reddish-brown.
