Ice probably contributed to high water levels along the Syr Darya River, which runs into the North Aral Sea. The northern section of the Aral Sea is white (light blue in the false color image) with winter ice, and the Syr Darya is also frozen in sections. Blocked by ice dams, the river expanded beyond its banks. The flooding is particularly clear in the false color image, which emphasizes the presence of water. In the false color image, water is dark blue and black, and ice and cloud are light blue. Bare ground is tan and pink. The southern section of the Aral Sea is emerald and tan. Sediment clouds the eastern lobe of the Sea, making the water appear to blend with the surrounding desert. In the false color image, the Sea seems far larger. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired these images on February 29, 2004.
