Summer Leadership Program

Leadership Training - Summer 2006

"This year, we should challenge those in the Coastal Sailing Training Program to imagine, while embarked, just how to design hands-on leadership development opportunities into the sail and let us know when they return." Admiral James M. Loy, USCG (Ret.) Tyler Professor of Leadership Development

The Institute for Leadership has partnered with The Coastal Sailing Program to enhance the leadership experience of the rising upper class cadets. During each of the trips, the Institute is sponsoring a dinner to introduce the Institute to the second-class cadets and to focus them on the Adm. Loy's Leadership Model.

The Coastal Sail Training Program (CSTP) has been an integral part of cadet summer training for the past 29 years, providing an unparalleled opportunity for cadet professional development and personal growth.

Cadets and Safety Officers surround the Leadership Model after their leadership discussion in Stonington, CT.

During the program, second-class cadets engage in an over-the-horizon smallboat experience, sailing and navigating aboard Coast Guard Academy yachts (commonly 44-foot Luders yawls) between numerous ports in southern New England and Long Island.

While on their trips, the cadets and safety officers spend an evening discussing leadership both at the Academy and in their careers as future Coast Guard Officers. Using the leadership model authored by Adm. Loy and Don Philips, as a guide the officers and cadets have an open and honest discussion on the way to becoming leaders in Academics.

Coupling the physical rigours of sailing with the leadership discussion and model serves to emphasize to the cadets what an exceptional experience they have at the United States Coast Guard Academy.
