11 September 2008 - The NSR (North Sea Route) is still classified as open water (< 1/10 of ice concentration, WMO, 1970) along the coastline of Laptev Sea as of 9/11/08. There are many potential leads (navigable openings in the sea ice, WMO, 1970) through this area.
Likely contributing factors that influence the opening of the Northern Sea Route this year include warm water advection from the Gulf Stream, warmer than normal temperatures along the Russian Arctic coast during the month of August, above average wind speeds and storm activity during the weeks preceding the opening, and reduction in perennial sea ice.
