The only place left on the navigable portions of the Mississippi from Minneapolis southward is at Lake Pepin...and the ice there appears to be deteriorating and diminishing fairly quickly now. The first towboat of the season pushed through Lake Pepin early on March 23..reporting that there was still 10 inches of solid ice between mile markers 765 to 770. The ice thickness there should continue to shrink daily. Outlook for next 7 days: While nighttime lows may occasionally dip a little below freezing in some locations over the next few nights through the weekend....daytime highs will generally be in the 40s and 50s. This...plus the fact that the water temperatures are already a few degrees above freezing at most locations...means that we do not expect there to be any more new ice development on the mainstem Mississippi and Illinois Rivers going from the present time into the rest of Spring. Therefore...this will be the last issuance of the weekly "Mississippi River and Illinois River Ice Statement" product for this season unless unforeseeable and dramatically different conditions develop. We will resume issuing Ice Statements once again next season around mid to late November depending on weather conditions at that time. ...dam... $$ NNNN
