A large complex of severe storms which developed over Minnesota earlier in the afternoon moved southeast across Wisconsin into northern Illinois.  This type of storm system is referred to as a "bow echo" due to the characteristic bow-shaped line of radar echoes as seen in the following radar image, valid around 8 PM CDT on July 10, 2008.

Notice the very large number of severe wind events -- indicated by the blue "W" circles to the north of the bow -- that were reported to NWS offices in Wisconsin and Illinois during the afternoon and evening.  More information about these storm reports is available from the NWS Storm Prediction Center.
