Wanted! Volunteers to help study storms

Volunteers are needed to participate in the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS) in Illinois and Indiana! Volunteers will be reporting rain, hail, and snow measurements from their backyard and are required to purchase an official CoCoRaHS rain gauge.

Anyone can participate; young, old, and in-between.  The only requirements are an enthusiasm for watching and reporting weather conditions, and a desire to learn more about how the weather can affect and impact our lives.

CoCoRaHS is a unique, non-profit, community-based network of volunteers of all ages and backgrounds, working together to measure and map precipitation (rain, hail and snow).   By using low-cost measurement tools, stressing training and education, and utilizing an interactive Web site, the aim is to provide the highest quality data for natural resource, education and research applications.  It began in Colorado in 1998, and currently has over 7500 observers in 19 states (4 new states joining on in the next few months including Iowa).

CoCoRaHS in Illinois is sponsored by the National Weather Service and the Illinois State Water Survey, while in Indiana it is sponsored by the Indiana State Climate Office.  Daily reports from CoCoRaHS observers will soon be displayed on a daily basis on the NWS Chicago web page.
