NOAA All Hazards Weather Radio Changes

The Chicago National Weather Service staff recently reviewed our NOAA Weather Radio coverage areas. Tone alert county areas will be revised in an effort to provide the best coverage we can, and to try to ensure that each county has at least two NWR stations to monitor – redundancy in case one transmitter goes down.

Effective April 1, 2006, watches, warnings and advisories for McHenry and Lake Counties in Illinois and Porter county Indiana will no longer be aired on KZZ-81 Lockport. For warnings in McHenry County, listeners should tune to KXI-41, Crystal Lake on a frequency of 162.500 MHz, or KZZ-76, Kenosha on frequency 162.450 MHz. People in Lake County, Illinois should tune to KXI-41, Crystal Lake on a frequency of 162.500 MHz, KWO-39, Chicago on frequency 162.550 MHz, or KZZ-76, Kenosha on frequency 162.450 MHz. People in Porter County Indiana should tune to WNG-689, Hebron on frequency 162.450 MHz, KWO-39, Chicago on frequency 162.550 MHz, or KJY-62, LaPorte on frequency 162.550 MHz (new station will be on the air March 2006).

Here are the counties that are currently served by each NOAA Weather transmitter in north central and northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana, and the changes that will take effect April 1, 2006.
