Thanksgiving Weather for Northern Illinois:   Statistics for Chicago and Rockford

 

Chicago:
The following statistics comprises 136 years of data, however snowfall data began in 1884, so it comprises of 124 years of data. Data collection began at the University of Chicago, then at Midway, and currently at O'Hare which is now the official station for Chicago.

High Temperatures on Thanksgiving at Chicago
Frequency distribution of high temperatures for Chicago. This dataset shows that the most frequent range of high temperatures on Thanksgiving is in between 40 and 49 degrees. Since Thanksgiving doesn’t always occur on the same day, there is no normal high. The highest temperature recorded on Thanksgiving is 69 degrees set on November 24th, 1966.  The coldest high temperature on Thanksgiving is 14 degrees which occurred on November 27th, 1930.  Last year, the high temperature was 33 degrees which is in the 2nd most common range of high temperatures.

Low Temperatures on Thanksgiving at Chicago
Frequency distribution of low temperatures for Chicago. This dataset shows that the most frequent range of low temperatures on Thanksgiving is in between 30 and 39 degrees. The lowest temperature recorded on Thanksgiving is -1 which occurred on November 23rd, 1950. The highest low temperature for Thanksgiving was 57 degrees in 1896. Last year, the low temperature was 25 degrees, which is in the 2nd most common range of low temperatures.

Precipitation on Thanksgiving at Chicago
Frequency distribution of precipitation for Chicago. This dataset shows that the most frequent amount of precipitation recorded on Thanksgiving is 0.00”, which accounts for 43% of the days in the dataset. The next most frequent range is 0.02” to 0.25”, closely followed by a trace of precipitation. The highest amount of precipitation on Thanksgiving occurred on November 28th, 1968 when 1.56” of precipitation fell. This is the only instance of where over an inch of precipitation fell on Thanksgiving. Last year, 0.01” of precipitation fell.

Snowfall on Thanksgiving at Chicago
Frequency distribution of snowfall for Chicago. This dataset shows that the most frequent amount of snowfall recorded on Thanksgiving is 0.0”, which accounts for 70% of the days in the dataset. The next most frequent range is a Trace, followed by 0.1” to 0.9”. The highest amount of snowfall recorded on Thanksgiving occurred on November 27th, 1980 when 3.0” of snow fell. Last year, 0.1” of snow fell.
