New Employee Orientation and Training


Welcome to the Berkeley Lab!   We value you and the talents that you bring to our workplace.  The training listed below will help you get oriented and off to the right start.   You are expected to complete the courses during your first 30 days at the Laboratory, unless otherwise noted in the course description. 

New Employee Briefing (NEB) - Mandatory for all employees.

This 20 minute online briefing introduces new employees to the Laboratory, how it’s organized, where things are, and where to find information needed to work here.  Links to employee services are also provided.  After viewing the material, you will be asked to enter your employee ID as confirmation that you completed the briefing.   The NEB is available in FLASH or HTML versions:

Trafficking Victims Protection - Mandatory for all employees.

This short online briefing ensures Lab employees understand their obligations to comply with federal laws enacted to combat trafficking in persons. To view the briefing, go here.


New Employee Benefits Orientation – Highly Recommended.

This orientation is for new employees who are benefits-eligible.  

  • Benefits OrientationBLI0702.  This orientation is given by the Lab’s Benefits Department in a small classroom setting. You will learn about the Lab’s health & welfare plans and retirement benefits.  This is an excellent opportunity to get your benefit questions answered.  Be sure to attend within your Period of Initial Eligibility (PIE), 31-days from your date of hire or eligibility for benefits.  To view the orientation schedule and to enroll, go to Employee Self Service Select the menu option “Training Enrollment”, click on “All Courses”, then select BLI0702.

Safety Training – Mandatory for all employees.

You must complete safety training in the following order:

  • General Employee Radiation Training – EHS0405 GERT.  Online course. To take the course click here
  • Introduction to Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H 10) – EHS0010.  You must complete EHS0405 before attending this training.  To enroll,  go to Employee Self Service

Computer Security Training – Mandatory for computer users.

What You Need to Know about Cyber Security at Berkeley Lab - Security 201.
This online course takes 10-20 minutes to complete.  The course is designed to inform you of your basic security responsibilities as an employee of LBNL, and to provide you with actions you can take to protect your computer systems.  To receive credit for the course, you must complete the training and view the course credit confirmation screen.  To take the course, click here


Manager and Supervisor Training – Mandatory for new supervisors.

Sexual Harassment Prevention Training (AB1825).

This course is a State of California requirement for new supervisors.  The UC Office of the President (UCOP) will notify you by email when to register and complete the training.


Property at the Berkeley Lab

The Procurement and Property Management Department is responsible for the acquisition of goods and services, as well as the management of Laboratory assets. If you have any questions, about  property at the laboratory, please contact the Procurement Department at x5151.
