[Federal Register: September 13, 1999 (Volume 64, Number 176)] [Notices] [Page 49506] From the Federal Register Online via GPO Access [wais.access.gpo.gov] [DOCID:fr13se99-111] ----------------------------------------------------------------------- DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR National Park Service Notice of Inventory Completion for Native American Human Remains in the Possession of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA AGENCY: National Park Service ACTION: Notice ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notice is hereby given in accordance with provisions of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), 43 CFR 10.9, of the completion of an inventory of human remains in the possession of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA. A detailed assessment of the human remains was made by University of Pennsylvania professional staff in consultation with representatives of the Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin and the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska. During the 1850s, human remains representing two individuals were removed from an unknown site by P. Gregg. In 1893, these human remains were acquired by the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia, PA. In 1966, these remains were placed on loan at the University of Pennsylvania Museum and were officially transferred into the University of Pennsylvania Museum's collections in 1998. No known individuals were identified. No associated funerary objects are present. Based on original accession information, these individuals have been identified as Native American. Also based on original accession information, these individuals have been identified as Winnebago. No further information exists for these individuals. Based on the above mentioned information, officials of the University of Pennsylvania Museum have determined that, pursuant to 43 CFR 10.2 (d)(1), the human remains listed above represent the physical remains of two individuals of Native American ancestry. Lastly, officials of the University of Pennsylvania Museum have determined that, pursuant to 43 CFR 10.2 (e), there is a relationship of shared group identity which can be reasonably traced between these Native American human remains and the Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin and the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska. This notice has been sent to officials of the Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin and the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska. Representatives of any other Indian tribe that believes itself to be culturally affiliated with these human remains should contact Dr. Jeremy Sabloff, the Williams Director, University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, 33rd and Spruce Streets, Philadelphia, PA 19104-6324; telephone: (215) 898-4051, fax (215) 898-0657, before October 13, 1999.
