How to Navigate the NAICS Correspondence Tables and Index

This web site provides access to all of the major components of the 1997 NAICS Manual: definitions, correspondence tables, and an alphabetic index.

The various elements are best integrated using a presentation in a "frame", but frames are not required, and one can proceed right from the screen above. But most users will want to click on the colored box in the center.

This presentation has two major elements, table 1 (NAICS to SIC) on top, table 2 (SIC to NAICS) on bottom. In fact it has four frames, since the heading of each table is separately fixed in place.

One of the options for finding a particular industry is to "drill down" to it starting either with a NAICS sector (table 1) or an SIC division (table 2). In this example we look for information about NAICS 51121, Software Publishers. Codes beginning with 51 are in the new Information Sector, which we find by cursoring down in the second frame from the top, then clicking on the it.

This brings up a subsector menu in that same frame, where we click on 511 Publishing Industries.

That brings us to codes starting with 5111, from which we cursor down to 5112. Table 1 shows us that NAICS 51121 was derived from SIC 7372, but the "*" next to the SIC code indicates that only part of SIC is included.

We can check for what happened to other components of SIC 7372 in Table 2, which to this point would have still included the menu of sector divisions illustrated above. One could drill down to SIC 7372, but we can take a shortcut by clicking on the underlined 7372 SIC code in table 1.

The part of table 2 illustrated above shows that SIC 7372 was split into two pieces, 51121 Software Publishing and 334611 Software Reproducing.

We can explore Software Reproducing by clicking on the NAICS code 334611 in table 2.

Table 1 now shows that 334611 Software Reproducing is associated in NAICS with compact disc and other audio reproduction, since both activities use similar manufacturing processes.

For a definition of 334611, one clicks on that code in table 1.

The definition appears in the frame otherwise used for the body of table 2, and for the moment the table 2 heading is irrelevant.

Using the Index

An "index" button appears in the heading of table 1. Clicking on it brings up a selector for the first letter.

If one were looking up Internet Service Provider, one would click on the "I" and then on the "IN" letter combination. From there is is necessary to cursor down (or use the slider) to the desired entries. The display gives the index entry on the left, then the NAICS code and the NAICS title. For a more complete definition, we can click on the NAICS code.

The definition section on this web site has two components: a narrative and a listing of all of the index entries that lead to this NAICS code. Perusing the list of index entries may reveal additional coverage of the NAICS category. Note that the index entries do not define "subindustries" but are merely a list of phrases that leads to classification in this NAICS category.
