Book Catalogues and Retailers

The University of Pennsylvania Libraries (hosts to this site)
have a selective list of
book sellers online.

BookWeb.org (run by the American Booksellers Association)
has a geographic directory of
bookstores.

Northern Lights has a directory of
Publishers' Catalogues that includes links to many publisher web sites.

The Open Directory also has a listing of
publishers of electronic and online books, which can be useful
if you're looking for specifically for online and other electronic
books, including ones you
have to pay for.
- Digital Book Index has listings of both free
and for-pay online books. Users are asked to register with a name,
email address, and organization (though one could actually skip doing this
when I checked.)
Book Reviews and Discussions
There are many book discussion sites on the Web, some run by book sellers,
others by book enthusiasts. Many are now published in blog format;
Technorati has a useful search engine for finding
such blogs if you search on appropriate keywords.
A very large collection of links to
literature sites of all kinds can be found at the
Open Directory.
There are also many Usenet newsgroups for open discussions of books and
literature,
rec.arts.books being the main one.
If you'd like to find or publicize
face-to-face book discussions in your local area,
the Reader's Circle website provides a useful listing service.
Research and Reference
This site is hosted by the
University of Pennsylvania Libraries,
which have links to many resources for online research.
Some of the resources listed
are not accessible by the general public, but many of them (those marked as "unrestricted access") are open to the world.
