APS Renewal

Message from Murray Gibson:

Renewing and upgrading the Advanced Photon Source: a real opportunity for user engagement

The Advanced Photon Source (APS) began providing brilliant x-ray beams for scientific research in 1996. Today, the APS annually serves almost 3500 users who produce more than 1000 refereed publications each year covering many areas of science and engineering. While productivity at the APS continues to grow, this facility is getting older. There are revolutionary new opportunities that will be available to our users when we avail ourselves of state-of-the-art technology for synchrotron radiation. We want to incorporate this technology into our facility in order to support future uses of the APS, especially in the high-energy x-ray region, which will remain our niche for the foreseeable future.

The APS renewal plan will encompass innovations in the beamlines and the x-ray source that are needed for dramatic improvements in the most important areas of user science. We continually engage our users and staff ab initio in building this APS renewal plan, just as we continue to consult with our Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) and other outside experts to help us craft a plan with maximum scientific impact. As we continue to move forward with our planning, information about the renewal, as well as details about how you can take part in the planning and communicate your perspective, can be found on this Web site.

The renewal of APS is the first and essential component of a long-range strategic plan for the APS that aims to continually provide our users with the best hard x-ray source in the nation, and beyond. During the renewal period, we will continue to evaluate, with our users, the alternatives for a next-generation high-energy x-ray source  to complement the renewed APS and the XFELs that will be coming into operation. We plan to develop a strong R&D program on future high-energy x-ray sources to identify the possible options.
