A large amount of smoke from many fires is visible in these true-color MODIS images acquired March 18, April 3, and April 8, 2002. The fires are burning in Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos. The fires, represented by red dots, are burning hot enough to be detected by MODIS, which flies in an orbit 705 km above the Earth’s surface. The smoke, which is a gray-green color, is clearly distinguishable from clouds, which are bright white and look like snow. It is possible to see the cloud’s shadows in the higher resolutions of these images.
