Fires in Angola and Democratic Republic of the Congo

MODIS detected dozens of fires burning in the African countries of Angola (bottom) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (top) in this image from May 16, 2001. Many of the Angola fires are burning in a north-south line that follows an area of higher elevation, perhaps because the area receives less rainfall, or perhaps due to a different land use/vegetation pattern for the area.
